Inside the Sonders Learning Center: Thoughtful Design for Lifelong Learning & Connection
At Sonders Fort Collins, every detail is designed with purpose – especially when it comes to the centerpiece amenity that will soon welcome residents: the Sonders Learning Center. While construction continues to make visible progress each month, the true story of this space begins long before walls rise and finishes arrive. It begins with intentionality.
Working closely with the Colorado State University’s Institute for the Built Environment (IBE), interior designer Drew Sorrells of Adue Interior Design crafted a vision that reflects the heart of the Sonders community: a place for lifelong learning, connection, creativity, and wellness. Her approach brings beauty and function together in a way that feels intuitive and inspiring for residents of every age.
Below is a look inside the design philosophy guiding the Sonders Learning Center, and how each element supports the way active adults live, gather, and grow.

A Space Inspired by Nature and Connected to It
The Sonders Learning Center draws its identity from the natural landscape surrounding it. You’ll see the calm shoreline of Richard’s Lake expressed in soft, fluid forms; the brightness of Colorado skies in its mineral-toned palette; and the textures of winter branches, gardens, stone, and sand in its layered materials.
Sorrells describes the overall feel as “powerful and gentle” – a balance of masculine grounding and feminine warmth. Natural woods, fluted clays, woven textures, and stone finishes invite both connection and curiosity, creating a sense of movement throughout the space. Every room feels modern, timeless, and distinctively Colorado.
This nature-forward approach aligns beautifully with the Sonders commitment to wellbeing, beauty, and authentic placemaking.

Space Planning with Purpose
While stunning materials and lighting create the ambiance, the most important design decisions were made long before the finishes were selected. The floorplan of the Sonders Learning Center is intentionally structured around Lifelong Homes & Lifelong Community principles, ensuring a space that welcomes everybody and every ability.
Key interior planning features include:
- Clear, intuitive pathways that allow residents (whether walking, rolling, or using mobility aids) to move comfortably through the building.
- Thoughtful spacing between elements, including widened transitions between the back bar and island in the community kitchen, creating a safer and more comfortable experience.
- Contrasting materials and color values for improved visibility and navigation, supporting those with changing eyesight while enhancing the aesthetic beauty.
- Strategic placement of wall décor, screens, and visual elements at varying sightlines and heights to ensure that someone seated – either in a lounge chair or a wheelchair – engages with art and learning experiences just as easily.
These design moves may be subtle, but they are incredibly intentional. And they help define Sonders as a place planned for aging gracefully.

Safety Without Compromise: Materials that Support a Healthy Culture of Aging
Aging well doesn’t mean compromising style. The Sonders Learning Center shows how thoughtful design can be both visually stunning and highly functional.
One of the most important considerations for Sonders’ residents: slip-resistant flooring – especially with the outdoor pool located just steps away. Because Falls are a major concern for active adults, surfaces were selected with higher traction ratings to reduce risk while still feeling warm, modern, and inviting.
Other materials were chosen not only for durability, but for the way they feel, sound, and perform in a community environment. Textiles, cladding, and wallcoverings create quiet, welcoming spaces that encourage lingering, learning, and connection.

Sustainability at the Core
From day one, Sonders was envisioned as a community rooted in resilience and responsibility, and the Sonders Learning Center continues that commitment through carefully vetted, environmentally conscious partners.
Highlights include:
1. Hand-Forged Lighting from Hubbardton Forge
Crafted in Vermont with earth-conscious manufacturing, these sculptural lighting pieces bring warmth, character, and artistry to the interiors. Each fixture blends tradition with modern innovation, elevating the space while supporting sustainable small business practices.
Made in Georgia using recycled and plant-based materials, Interface flooring stores carbon and contributes to cleaner indoor air. It’s durable, beautiful, and aligned with Sonders’ emphasis on long-term environmental health.
A leader in sustainable textile production, Designtex uses a no wastewater manufacturing process – an exceptional rarity. Their materials maintain healthy indoor air quality, resist wear, and bring soft, intentional texture to the space.
These choices are not just about eco-friendly labels. They reflect deeper values of honesty, connection to nature, and long-term wellbeing.

A Place Designed for Community, Curiosity, and Connection
When complete, the Sonders Learning Center will offer a rich blend of programming, gathering spaces, and an environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and social connection. Layered lighting creates moments of intimacy and moments of activity. Materials invite touch and interaction. Every room supports opportunities for growth – whether it’s through art, cooking demonstrations, workshops, fitness, or simply meeting a new neighbor.
This is more than a building. It’s a place for stories to be shared, talents to be discovered, and community bonds to deepen.
And as construction continues, the vision is becoming more real every day.
