Find the Best Skiing in Northern Colorado Near Fort Collins

Sonders Fort Collins is conveniently located to a number of excellent mountain resorts, making it easy to find places to ski near your new home and townhome in Fort Collins. These are our favorite destinations for nearby skiing in northern Colorado.

Vail

Vail is synonymous with dramatic, steep downhill runs, complex black diamond routes, and incredible, dry, powdery snow. The largest ski resort in Colorado, covering more than 5,300 acres, is just a two and a half hours drive from Sonders Fort Collins. Built from the beginning as a ski town, Vail offers a myriad of winter experiences for all levels from seasoned pro to absolute beginner, complemented by an incredible food and beverage scene for all your aprés-ski needs. No skiing season in Northern Colorado is complete without a trip to Vail, and from Sonders, it’s an easy trip.

Breckenridge

Breckenridge is another incredible spot for true Colorado skiing, and it’s about 15 minutes closer to Sonders Fort Collins than Vail. With five distinctive peaks and a bustling resort town at the mountain’s base, there is something for everyone at Breckenridge. It’s a quick jaunt off of I-25 so you feel like you’re tucked away high in the mountains.

Keystone

Clocking in at a travel time similar to Breck, Keystone offers a slightly more serious, sport-driven experience than either Breckenridge or Vail. If you’re the type to scarf down a Clif bar on the lift rather than stop for lunch and a beer at the lodge, Keystone is a top choice for you as far as where to ski near Fort Collins. There are options for laid-back food and drink on the mountain, but skiers and riders come here to hit the slopes and enjoy long runs and less crowds.

Snowy Range

Only an hour and forty-five minutes from Fort Collins is Snowy Range Ski Resort. Just head north to cross into Wyoming and then west through Laramie for a family-friendly and affordable ski adventure. Grab a quick bite and a warm coffee at The Lodge before heading up the lifts.

Eldora Mountain

Less than two hours from Sonders Fort Collins, Eldora Mountain is a small but mighty locale for passionate skiers and riders who’d rather not stomach the I-70 traffic. Eldora is particularly proud of the fact that they have more groomed terrain than any other resort in Colorado, and they’re also open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The town also boasts a divey, comfortable aprés scene.

Echo Mountain

Wth about the same drive time as Eldora – under two hours – you can find yourself at Echo Mountain further south. This fun, edgy ski area was popular in the 60s, then experienced a period of dormancy before opening again as a terrain park in 2005. Now, it’s an incredibly affordable and accessible winter sports experience, albeit small – the longest run is .7 miles and there are only 7 runs total. It’s a great spot for beginners and families with young kids!

Winter Park

Barring traffic, the drive from Sonders Fort Collins to Winter Park Resort will take about 2 hours and 15 minutes. This is a travel time that most would consider well worth it for the impressive runs and powder on offer at Winter Park. You’re spoiled for choice here, with groomed runs for cross-country skiing, mogul-covered black diamonds to challenge even the sportiest veteran, and a robust city to keep you fed, watered, and entertained when you’re not on the mountain.

Loveland Ski Area

Loveland Ski Area is just two hours from Sonders, and this family-friendly mountain is a beloved favorite of many locals. It may not have the same wow-factor as some of the other large resorts in the area, but the short commute and fun, community-oriented environment at Loveland make it worth the trip, especially if you’re looking to do a short day of skiing.

Steamboat Springs

If you don’t mind a little bit of a longer drive, like three and a half hours, and would travel the extra length for a town draped in ranching and western history, then head to Steamboat Springs. It’s directly west of Sonders Fort Collins, as the crow flies, but the drive involves exploring the Rocky Mountain’s peaks, valleys, and quaint mountain towns. That’s until you enter Steamboat’s Main Street and experience the snowcapped peaks and bluebird skies.
